This is a very comprehensive and well designed course that will take even complete beginner to conversational proficiency. There are few language courses that are as effective as Rosetta Stone; and it teaches you in a simple, fast and effective way.
The Difficulties of Learning a New Language
The global language learning industry is worth a whopping $82.6 billion. It is this high for the following reason: learning a new language is incredibly hard.
If you’ve ever tried to learn a new language, and become competent and proficient, you’ll understand that not only is retaining the language difficult, but associating the words in context is even harder.
The problem is, and it’s a real problem, the majority of language teaching courses are built on a faulty framework.
Katie Nielson, the chief education officer at a language-learning app Voxy, explains that the common approach to learning a new language — whether it is for high schoolers, college students, and adults — is not optimised, at all. In fact, its makes learning a language HARDER not easier
She outlines that our main mistake is that we treat language like other scholastic subjects:
“In history class, you start chronologically and you use dates in order of how things happened,” Nielson says. “That’s just not how language-learning works. You can’t memorize a bunch of words and rules and expect to speak the language, then what you have is knowledge of ‘language as object.’ You can describe the language, but you can’t use it.”
So we need to move on from this faulty framework of memorisation if we want to effectively learn a language; not just in the short term, but in the long term. But how do we do that?
Thankfully, Rosetta Stone understood this principle, and understood what makes an effective language course.
Rosetta are able to deliver, because they enable us refocus our strategy and overcome these challenges by seeking out an efficient and working framework; where we Learn by simply connecting words, images and sounds in realistic scenarios.
That is why we purchased Rosetta Stone and that is why we are writing this Rosetta Stone Spanish Review.

And it doesn’t matter where you are at in the learning process, it’s easy to understand, set up and use.
“I gave myself six months to complete this course in order to be able to have a go at talking to Spanish-speaking guests at our niece’s wedding yesterday, of which more anon… I have to say the results were unbelievable. My knowledge of Spanish prior to buying the course was virtually nothing, although my French is beyond ‘A’ level and that had to be an advantage. I’ve worked hard at it, probably up to ten hours a week, to do my part of the ‘immersion’ technique. I have also bought a couple of books of Spanish short stories with parallel English text to reinforce my learning and extend my vocabulary. I strongly advise the purchase of a good dictionary to use alongside the Course and recommend the Collins Pocket Spanish Dictionary which is excellent value for money. I like the way in which the course is broken down into bite-size chunks: a core lesson which takes about half an hour, followed by five-to-ten-minute reinforcement sections concentrating on reading, vocabulary, grammar, writing and pronunciation. At the end of each section you are given your mark as a percentage and this is very motivating, allowing you to go back and repeat a section if you aren’t pleased with how you did. The main factor for me is how enjoyable the course has been and how much I’m going to miss it now that it’s finished – however, it will be this summer’s challenge to work out a way to maintain my current level and develop my speaking skills; it will definitely be an ongoing hobby.
As far as value for money is concerned, it comes in at about the same cost of a couple of terms of evening classes and I’m convinced that I couldn’t have come so far in such a short time using that route, especially as we’ve spent three of the last six months out of the country. Of course I can go back at any time and use the course as useful revision.
And how did the wedding go? I was seated between a couple with very little English and we had a really fun evening – there is an open invitation to holiday in Mexico so, all in all, mission accomplished.
